The Power of a nadir Shot

Updated: Apr 30, 2025

In aerial photography, a nadir shot refers to a photograph taken from directly overhead, looking straight down at a 90° angle to the ground. It’s a simple but powerful perspective that offers a clear, map-like view of the landscape below.

One of my favourite ways to capture a property is with a nadir shot. There's something incredibly satisfying about looking directly down over a house or a site - it feels almost like you're studying a map, giving a true sense of the location, its surroundings, and how it all fits into the bigger picture.

This style of photography is simple, yet highly effective. By keeping the angle exactly the same for each project, it maintains a level of consistency across all my property shoots. It’s a clean, professional way to showcase different homes while ensuring that the only thing that changes is the location itself. Whether it’s a suburban home, a country farmhouse, or a coastal retreat, each nadir shot tells a story of place - and it does so with clarity and precision.

Today's photograph is a perfect example: a stunning seafront house with a beautiful, rugged rocky landscape right on its doorstep. The textures of the rocks, the gentle sweep of the coastline, and the neat footprint of the home all come together to create a striking visual. It's these moments - the natural meeting the man-made - that make aerial photography so rewarding.

Nadir shots are a simple technique, but one that never fails to reveal the character of a location in a fresh and compelling way.
